Back then they were called On A Friday, and guitarist Jonny Greenwood hadn’t yet joined - he was in another band, Illiterate Hands, with Thom’s brother Andy. Interesting fact: around this time On A Friday’s line-up for live shows featured three saxophone players, which is kind of hard to imagine now.
The photo was taken in the bedroom of Nigel Powell (another member of Illiterate Hands), where On A Friday made their first recordings. A veteran of the Oxford music scene, these days Powell plays drums for Frank Turner. And Radiohead? Well, they went on to do pretty well too.
